This Declaration is known as the magna carta for crime victims and has inspired programs and legislation across the world – most recently the International Criminal Court, standards in the European Union, and the comprehensive legislation and program in Japan in 2004. It also inspired the ECOSOC acceptance of the Guidelines on Justice in Matters involving Child Victims and Witnesses of Crime.
