The Mayor of the City of Edmonton established a task force to recommend an evidence based strategy to reduce crime through prevention to complement policing. The City Council adopted the recommendations to create and fund Reach Edmonton Council for Safe Communities, which is a nine point plan including actions to reduce youth and aboriginal crime as well as establish a leadership centre to plan and evaluate initiatives.

Mexico has adopted legislation that establishes a national crime prevention center and will promote evidence based strategies to reverse the escalation in violence and stop crime.
The Province of Alberta, Canada became the first jurisdiction in the world to invest in a sustained and comprehensive strategy to use evidence to reduce crime and respect crime victims’ rights. It has invested $500 million in new money in a combination of smart enforcement, pre-crime treatment programs and social prevention to reduce crime over 3 years.
This task force faced the challenge of high rates of interpersonal violence in South Africa during the Mandela years by recommending ways in the White Paper on Safety and Security for local and regional government to tackle the causes of violence and apply research results to stop violence.
