“Prevention is the cheapest and most effective way to deal with crime – everything else is simply picking up the pieces of failure that has gone before.” Prime Minister Cameron in the UK talking about an intelligent crime policy that overlooks investment in prevention.

In the same week, good doctors collaborating with the World Health Organization show the costs of more of the same but stress the potential dividends to victims and taxpayers of intelligent investment in proven prevention.

Waller calls for Mexico and World Bank to invest in Violence Prevention

Having consulted on criminal justice systems around the world, Irvin Waller addressed 800 participants in Mexico City brought together to plan the future of violence prevention in Mexico. His presentation used the science and successes in his books to show how smart investments such as those in Bogotá and Alberta would stop the rampant violence. The conclusions picked up his theme of a dollar more for prevention to match every new dollar for law enforcement.

Waller invited to brief Minister of Justice for Alberta

Irvin Waller called attention to the conclusions from the World Health Organization and the UN in a 30 minutes presentation to the Minister, chief justices, correctional and police leaders about crime and its costs. He cited the scientific evidence that programs addressing risk factors have reduced crime and prevented violence. He explained the importance of a strong municipal role in achieving crime reduction outcomes.
